Cllr Paul Donnelly at EU Parliament to discuss Right2Water
Dublin West Sinn Fein
election candidate Paul Donnelly has taken part in a delegation to the European
Parliament to discuss the Citizen's Initiative on the Right2Water.
The
Fingal county councillor and member of the Water and Environment Special Policy
Committee (SPC) was joined by leading representatives of the Irish Right2Water
campaign hosted by Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan.
Speaking from Brussels,
Mr Donnelly said:
"Today
was an opportunity for me to meet with a number of EU representatives and engage
in a number of interesting discussions focused on water services provision and
how access to water should be designated a human right. This resource should
not be treated as a commodity.
We discussed with
different groups issues such as privatisation, which in some cases resulted in
the doubling of water services charges to citizens and the subsequent
re-municipalisation of water services in many parts of Europe"
"I
look forward to bringing back what we have learned today to the rest of the
Dublin 15 Right2Water group and I'm sure that this will help strengthen our
campaign in the coming weeks and months".
