Portiuncula Inquiry must address all cases of concern – Ó Caoláin
"Commenting on the demand of families to have their case or cases of concern included under the Terms of Reference of the soon to be established inquiry into a series of tragic and problematic births at the Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe Co. Galway, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin T.D. has called on the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar and HSE Director General Tony O’Brien to ensure the Terms of Reference allow for the inclusion of not only all those cases that are currently seeking address but any others that present during the course of the inquiry teams address of these alarming outcomes.
“It is vital that a comprehensive inquiry is set in motion with the prospect of including address of further cases and concerns that might present in the course of the inquiry teams address of, not just the acknowledged seven cases, but the many more that have sought inclusion since the decision to establish the inquiry was first announced.
“I have today written to both the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar T.D. and the Director General of the HSE Tony O’Brien urging the extension of the Terms of Reference to include all cases and concerns that have and might still present. Nothing less than a thorough inquiry into all practices and procedures, and the competency of all concerned, at the maternity unit in Portiuncula Hospital will suffice given the seriousness of the outcomes now known” concluded Deputy Ó Caoláin.
