Positive engagement by Irish Right2Water delegation in EU Parliament- Lynn Boylan MEP
Dublin Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed the very positive engagement of the Irish Right2Water activists with European stakeholders in the European Parliament.
Ms Boylan said:
“The delegation I invited to Brussels discussed the broader issues associated with the campaign for fair access to clean water services. The Citizen’s Initiative I am part of has helped elevate the Irish campaign to the next level and the debate was framed around water as a human right.
We discussed and heard from other water activists and touched on the issue of water services privatisation and the subsequent water services cut off for those who can’t afford to pay. What was particularly interesting were the case studies of Paris and Berlin and the subsequent reversion to public partnerships after disastrous attempts at privatisation.
While at the moment the focus in Ireland is on water charges and rightly so, we also would be remiss if we took our eye off the ball in relation to the threat of privatisation. A prospect which has not been adequately dealt with by the Irish government. We must acknowledge the twin consequences of privatisation of water services, rising costs and accessibility, as evidenced by the case studies referenced by water representatives in Brussels.”
