Doherty welcomes progress on an alternative budget costings service
Sinn Féin TD and finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has today welcomed Minister Michael Noonan’s comments that an independent service to calculate the costings of the opposition’s budget proposals was worth ‘consideration in depth’.
Deputy Doherty said:
“It would a very positive step for an independent service be put in place in order to cost the alternative budget proposals that the opposition parties submit each year. Sinn Féin have consistently called for such a body in our own alternative budgets. Moreover, a neutral body would allow for the emphasis to shift back to matters of policy, not just figures.”
“Whether the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council could fulfil this role or a new body might have to be formed remains to be seen. The matter would also be a good start to re-examining the Budget process. The current system whereby opposition deputies cannot table particular amendments to a Finance bill is archaic and stifles proper debate on finance legislation.”
“The provision of this type of process would allow for a proper, realistic, and wholesome debate on alternative budgets and policies and would contribute to the Budget debate.”
