Providing Civic Leadership - A Day of Reflection
Derry Mayor Gearoid Ó hÉara, speaking at a Belfast Press Conference where he was joined by Sinn Fein first citizens - Gerry McHugh (Fermanagh) Patsy Groogan (Magherafelt) Seán Clarke, (Omagh) and Jarleth McNulty (Strabane) has welcomed the party's response to the Day of Reflection initiative launched in Derry last week.
Cllr Ó hÉara said:
"I welcome the response of party president Gerry Adams to the initiative launched in Derry city last week and the coming together of Sinn Féin colleagues from Fermanagh, Magherfelt, Omagh and Strabane here today.
"My own initiative in Derry is the culmination of months of engagement with many different sections of the community within that city and builds upon the important work initiated by Alex Maskey during his term as Mayor of Belfast.
"The response of party colleagues demonstrates to me the willingness of Sinn Fein in positions of civic leadership to be progressive in addressing the divisions within our society.
"Each of us will be working towards a day of reflection on December 10th. This a sincere, authentic tribute to all who have lost their lives as a result of war and conflict and for all those who still live with the pain and memory of that loss.
"It is an initiative that is not uniform across any of these council areas but is guided and shaped by the engagement that each of us is working on with the people we represent as first citizens. It is still very much a work in progress." ENDS
