Magherafelt District Council - Day of Reflection to mark International Human Rights Day December 10th
Sinn Féin Chair of Magherfelt District Council, Cllr Patsy Groogan announces plans to hold civic reception to mark 'A Day of Reflection.
Speaking at Press Conference, with Sinn Féin Mayors and Chairs from across the Six Counties Cllr Groogan said:
"As Chair of Magherafelt District Council I am honoured to represent all the people of this district . I am aware that in representing our citizens I have a civic duty to take into account all the range and diversity of beliefs and traditions which go to make up our community. This is a duty which I take very seriously and since being elected chair I have endeavoured to fulfill.
"It is in this context that I wish to echo the sentiments expressed by my party colleague Gearóid Ó hEara, Mayor of Derry, and that I am actively exploring ways in which to afford our community the opportunity for a civic occasion for reflection. I intend to mark International Human Rights Day, December10 2004, as a day of civic reflection on which people can reflect on all those who have suffered as a result of war and conflict.
"I intend to host a civic occasion of reflection in the Chair's office on December 10 at which individuals and groups can come along and mark the day. This occasion will be underpinned by the principles of equality, dignity, respect and sensitivity and will be all inclusive and non hierarchical." ENDS
