UUP position on welfare staggering in its hypocrisy – Maskey
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said today the UUP’s position on the welfare bill due to come before the Assembly next week is a staggering piece of ludicrous double speak.
Speaking today Mr Maskey said.
“This intervention from the UUP in the week before the welfare bill comes to the floor of the Assembly is as absurd as it is disingenuous.
“This is a party who stood in unity with the Tories and on a manifesto which has delivered cuts to public services and an ideological assault on the welfare state.
“Sinn Fein led the opposition to this assault and protected the most vulnerable. Now the UUP claims it is protecting people from its own policies. This is ludicrous!
“This clearly indicates that the UUP is the party of gimmicks, trite sound bites with no principles and less substance.
“The people here rejected the Tory party and their UUP fellow travellers won no seats. That is why they have abandoned their pro-Tory alliance.
“Their ridiculous attempt to reinvent themselves is laughable.
“During the negotiations on welfare SF achieved a series of protections unique to the north for the most vulnerable in our society, with funds of £565m being made available by the Executive for the next six years
“In doing this Sinn Féin has succeeded in protecting people from the Thatcherite policies of the UUP and their bedfellows in the Tory party.”
