Adams contrasts arrest of anti-Water Charge activists with treatment of those linked to Swiss bank
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has contrasted today's early morning arrests of anti-Water Charge activists in Dublin with the 'kid glove' treatment of those linked to secret Swiss Bank files.
Gerry Adams said:
"The contrast between the early morning arrests of anti-Water Charge activists and what appears to have been the kid-glove treatment of those linked to secret Swiss bank files is stark.
"Leaked documents from the Swiss branch of the HSBC bank show that 350 clients associated with Ireland held more than €3bn in accounts with the bank.
"The bankers advised clients on how to keep money hidden from State authorities and offered deals to help tax dodgers stay ahead of the law.
"Just 20 Irish account holders have since made settlements with the Revenue Commissioners worth over €4.5m.
"This was money lost to the State and was ultimately taken instead from ordinary citizens.
"There were no early morning arrests or prosecutions. The contrast with the treatment on anti-Water charge activists, including elected representatives, will not be lost on citizens."
