Homophobia must be challenged across Europe - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the fact that moves to strengthen discriminatory legislation against the gay community in Slovakia failed due to lack of public support.
Ms Anderson said;
"The Slovakian people were asked to vote to strengthen the unjust and discriminatory ban on same sex couples marrying or adopting but the government's bid failed because of low turnout.
"In fact, just over 21 per cent of eligible voters took part in the referendum, far short of the 50 per cent required to change the legislation.
"The result has shown the lack of public appetite for these draconian laws and the government must recognise that and not only respect the decision but reverse the unfair laws currently in place.
"Sinn Féin is against discrimination against the LGBT community in Ireland, in Hungary, in Slovakia and right across Europe.
"We will continue to challenge homophobia and discrimination in all its forms."
