Laverty verdict further highlights need for Ballymurphy Massacre inquiry - Sheehan
Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has said that the successful appeal today by Terry Laverty was another reason why there needs to be a full inquiry into the Ballymurphy massacre.
Mr Sheehan said,
“The judge accepted today that the evidence given by the British soldiers involved in the arrest of Terry Laverty was unreliable and overturned his conviction for riotous behaviour.
“These are the same soldiers who evidence was taken for granted in the case of eleven people being shot dead in the Ballymurphy massacre at around the same time.
“This is another reason why we need a full independent inquiry into the killing of these eleven people as it is clear that the truth is being withheld.
“The British Government must act know and hand over the relevant documentation so that the first step in getting to the truth, inquests can be held.”
