Patients in agony waiting up to a year for procedures at Cappagh Hospital – Ellis

10 February, 2015 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis has said that patients waiting on knee, back and other orthopaedic procedures at Cappagh Hospital are living in agony and having to wait up to and over 12 months for appointments. He made his comments as part of a debate on staffing levels at Cappagh hospital and its effects on waiting lists.

Deputy Ellis said:

“I have raised with the Minister last month. I was told that extra money was being made available and new initiatives taken but many have not seen much change and are still waiting months even for a date for their appointment.”

“We need to see real clear evidence of a new higher capacity to deal with waiting lists for the hospital through increases in staffing and facilities and a noticeable drop in waiting times. This may not happen overnight but we need to know what progress is being made.”

“Recently an orthopaedic surgeon told my colleague us that the level of funding for the hospital has been nowhere near sufficient to look after persons in a timely way and this lack of funding was preventing a person from having an urgent hip replacement which they are in critical need of.”

“At the end of January, there were 686 patients awaiting knee surgery, 100 of which had been waiting between 6 and 12 months and a further 70 had been waiting over a year.”

“I have dealt with a number of constituents who have had to wait months in agony with no quality of life without even a date for their appointment. I am working with a 76 year old woman who has Parkinson’s disease and dementia and is waiting on a back operation for 2 years and is on the urgent list since March 18th 2014. A 50 year old married man with 3 children who has Psoriatic Arthritis who has been waiting 18 months to have his hands straightened and fused and another woman who is 79 years old has been house bound because she needs a replacement knee and is 3 years in total waiting with no quality of life.”
