Adams concerned at large number of undiagnosed breech births in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital
Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed his concerns following last night’s RTÉ Prime Time programme which revealed a “disproportionally large number” of undiagnosed breech births in the midwife led maternity unit in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. It was reported that a dozen breech births at Drogheda hospital went unnoticed until late labour.
Gerry Adams said:
“This report will have caused concerns especially to women using the Midwife led maternity unit in Our Lady of Lourdes. Debate on the issues involve must be sensitively and sensibly based on the fullest possible information. This requires transparency. The HSE and HIQA must carry out an exhaustive review to reassure the public.”
Mr Adams added:
“Staff in Our Lady Of Lourdes are highly committed and work under huge pressure, not least because of the lack of capacity in the hospital. This regularly leads to the number of patients on trolleys in hospitals corridors being the highest in the State. This may not be a factor in the Midwife and maternity unit, but it is certainly a reality for everyone using or working in the hospital. There is an onus on the Government to resolve this issue and to deal urgently with any other issues which may arise on the Maternity unit.”
