Liadh Ní Riada MEP welcomes launch of consultation on Acht na Gaeilge

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has welcomed the process of consultation on Acht na Gaeilge launched by the North’s Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Carál Ní Chuilín.

Speaking from Strasbourg this morning, Ní Riada said;

“The consultation launched by Minister Ní Chuilín presents an opportunity for everybody to play a role in the formulation of Acht na Gaeilge.

“This is a progressive and important step in furthering language rights in the north.

“The Irish language is a living language.

“Acht na Gaeilge is a commitment under the St. Andrews agreement and it is about achieving rights and equality for those who use the language every day.

“It also a matter of cultural identity for a great many people who live on the island of Ireland.

“The protection and enhancement of the Irish language does not pose a threat to anybody.

“In fact, it will improve levels of appreciation for cultural diversity across all communities.

“I want to commend Carál for her tireless work in this area.

“I encourage people from all backgrounds to engage in what will be a very constructive process of consultation.”
