Kenny and Noonan not acting in Ireland’s interests in Europe – Adams

11 February, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Speaking after a rally in solidarity with the Greek people at Leinster House this afternoon Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said the Irish Government has taken the side of the EU elite and the ECB against the interests of the people of Greece.

Deputy Adams said this stance is not in the interests of Irish citizens and appears to be primarily motivated by the government’s narrow electoral interests.

He said:

“Yesterday Minister Noonan said he is ‘pessimistic’ that a solution can be found for Greece in relation to its unsustainable debt burden.  He also said that he did not favour a debt write-down for Greece.”

“Minister Noonan had nothing supportive or encouraging to say of the Greek position and showed no solidarity with the hard-pressed people of Greece.”

“It is clear that the Irish Government has taken the side of the EU elite and the ECB against the interests of the people of Greece.”

“This stance is not in the interests of Irish citizens and appears to be primarily motivated by the government’s narrow electoral interests.”

“Enda Kenny and Michael Noonan are acting as representatives of the EU elite in Ireland.  They are not acting as representatives of the Irish people.”

“It is incomprehensible that our government would rule out any deal on Ireland’s debt if the Greeks are successful in obtaining one for their own people.”
