O’Brien calls for Minister for Education to meet academic staff of Institutes of Technology

11 February, 2015 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Speaking from the Dáil today, Deputy Jonathan O’Brien, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, questioned the Minister for Education on the merger of Cork IT and IT Tralee following the teacher union lodging a complaint with the LRC.

 The Cork TD said:

“It is clear from what the TUI Cork Colleges Branch is saying, that their members, the academic staff, have no confidence in the merger between Cork IT and IT Tralee.”

“The Minister has failed to address the concerns of the teaching staff and has deflected questions by saying that the process to get technological university status was always very clear.”

“No one is saying that it’s unclear, they are saying that they may not be able to deliver the changes.”

“They have no confidence in the process and it is clear that there is a massive risk that the institutions could go through a rationalisation process and end up being denied technological university status.”

“I called on the Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan to meet with the TUI members in order to address their concerns, and she dodged the request by referring to the LRC dispute.”
