Attack on Newtonards Road memorial wrong - Ó Donnghaile

16 February, 2015 - by Mairead O’Donnell

Sinn Féin Cllr Niall Ó Donnghaile has condemned those behind the attack on a memorial on the Lower Newtonards Road last night.

Speaking today Cllr Ó Donnghaile said:

"I want to condemn outright those responsible for attacking the memorial on the Lower Newtonards Road last night. This isn't the first time it has been damaged and in the past both myself and other community leaders from the Short Strand have visited it to show clearly that this type of attack is rejected universally in East Belfast.

"The desecration of any memorial or monument is a sad reflection on those responsible.

"I have no doubt that community leaders in the inner-East will continue to rise above any challenges and engage positively and for the betterment of all our people. If last nights damage was an attempt to heighten tensions between gangs as we face into the midterm-break then political and community leaders, the PSNI and most especially parents, must make sure we work to ensure a safe time for all of our neighbours."
