Sinn Féin welcome teacher vetting measures – O’Brien
Speaking in the Dáil today, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien welcomed the Teaching Council Bill and emphasised the importance of vetting of all teachers.
The Cork North Central TD said:
“We welcome the Teaching Council Bill and are completely supportive of ensuring that all teachers are vetted.”
“We support the use of soft information in relation to vetting procedures and we are seeking clarification from the Minister regarding what information will be made available to the public.”
“We note that this Bill doesn’t address the issue of the SNAs and other non-teaching staff in schools not being vetted, and we know from parliamentary questions that the Department doesn’t actually hold accurate information as to the numbers of SNAs and non-teaching staff who aren’t vetted.”
“We are calling for the Minister to rectify this.”
