Nesbitt needs to explain sudden concern on age discrimination

20 February, 2015 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said Mike Nesbitt's hypocrisy knows no bounds following his criticism of legislation to tackle discrimination on age discrimination as he voted against protections for under 18s.

 Ms Fearon said;

 "Sinn Féin is supportive of inclusive legislation to stop age discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities and services.

 "I brought a motion before the Assembly two years ago to ensure protection for everyone regardless of age.

 "The hypocrisy of Mike Nesbitt on this issue knows no bounds. He calls on others to explain why young people will not be included in the proposed age discrimination legislation while ignoring the fact that he voted in favour of a DUP amendment to the motion which called for protection to over 18s only.

 "Sinn Féin has now been able to ensure there will be equality legislation which is the most advanced on these islands for people aged 16 and over.

 "Until now no one has had protection against age discrimination because of a DUP veto and objection to the inclusion of children and young people within this legislation.

 "We will continue to work particularly with the children and young people’s sector to ensure the full extension of age discrimination legislation.”
