Sinn Féin welcomes PSNI Human Rights Report

20 February, 2015

Sinn Féin candidate for Foyle Gearóid Ó hEára has welcomed the launch and publication of the Policing Board’s Human Rights Annual Report.

Speaking after the launch of the report at Crumlin Road Gaol Mr Ó hEára said,

“The report deals with a broad range of topics, including victims, the use of force, covert policing, treatment of suspects, Policing with the Community, and human rights awareness in the PSNI.

“The issues of domestic violence and hate crime feature prominently in the report as does policing with and for young people.

“It’s important that the PSNI recognises the need to tackle these issues with the seriousness they deserve.

“Human rights must be at the heart of policing and a key role is to monitor PSNI performance in this respect.  We have seen a lot of progress over the years in accountability, training, and the way the police carry out their everyday role.

“Legacy inquests remain an area of deep concern and PSNI must ensure that all information is provided to the coroner in a timely fashion to uphold the rights of the families of those killed.

“It is crucial the policing service is fully human right compliant and I will continue to work to ensure human rights are at the highest standard possible.”
