Greek deal is first crack in wall of austerity – Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has described the loan extension to Greece as "the first crack in the wall of austerity."
Deputy Doherty said:
"I welcome the four month extension of the loan to Greece. This funding will undoubtedly help the Greek people through the coming weeks.
“This deal represents the first crack in the wall of austerity that the Irish government and others said could not be broken.
“The detail will emerge over the coming days and weeks. However, it is clear that for the first time a government has used its mandate to stand up for citizens and challenge the austerity consensus. It is an important result especially after many threats.
“For the first time the austerity hawks have had to blink.
“There remains a huge challenge ahead for Greece and its government but also for the entire EU, which must now accept that there is no going back to the mindset that perpetuates permanent grinding austerity.
“The role of Ireland in this chain of events has been disappointing.
“History will show that the Fine Gael and Labour Party government stood with the bullies and or best hid in the corner when the first crack in the wall of austerity was achieved.”
