Cllr Rachel McCarthy selected as the Sinn Féin General Election candidate for Cork South West

21 February, 2015 - by Rachael McCarthy

Sinn Féin Councillor Rachel McCarthy has been selected to run for the party at the next General Election in the constituency of Cork South West.

Councillor McCarthy was selected at a convention held at the Clonakilty Hotel in West Cork tonight.

The Convention was also attended by Liadh Ní Riada MEP and Jonathan O'Brien TD.

Speaking after the event, Cllr McCarthy said;

“I am delighted to be standing for Sinn Féin at the next general election. It will be an election that will shape the political direction of this island for many years to come.

“I will go to the people of Cork South West with the message that there is a fairer and better way of governing.

“The interests of ordinary people can no longer take a back seat to the interests of the political elites and the golden circles that have brought communities throughout this state to the point of ruination.

“There is much talk of a recovery. But who will the recovery, designed by the establishment parties, actually benefit?

“WIll be it be the rural towns and villages of this constituency the social fabric of which has been ripped to shreds by the policies of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Labour Party?

“Will that recovery be for communities that have lost their post offices, been marginalised for lack of infrastructural investment from this government and whose families have had to stand and watch as their youngest and brightest emigrate to look for decent work?

“I don’t think the recovery designed by this current government will be for the benefit of the ordinary people of this constituency or for the small farmers of Cork South West who are been saddled with unfair fines while trying to carve out a living.

“I will go to the Dáil to fight for a fair recovery and for the protection of our public services.

“Sinn Féin has a vision for a fairer Ireland and a new republic - one in which citizens have real rights that cannot be discarded at the whim of a detached government.

“I want to give the voters of Cork South West an opportunity to break with the past and move away from the parties that have so badly failed the people.

“The people of Ireland want real change. They cannot bear anymore hardship under austerity and want to end the unfair Household Tax and Water Charges. Sinn Féin will put our vision of a united, fair, prosperous and progressive Ireland to the people north and south. It is on that basis that we hope to win support from the people of Ireland and lead a government of real change.”
