O'Brien calls for immediate publication of school admissions legislation

24 February, 2015 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Speaking following the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss the case against a school where a Traveller woman alleged discrimination based on their past pupils rule, Sinn Féin TD and Education Spokesperson Jonathan O'Brien called for the implementation of the Education (Admissions to School) Bill as a means to end discrimination against Traveller children.

The Cork North Central TD said:

“Nobody should have to go to court to try and secure an appropriate school place for their child.”

“The school admissions legislation has been long promised by this government and there is still no sign of it.”

“This Bill has the potential to stop situations arising where children are indirectly discriminated against in this manner.”

“Regardless of the Supreme Court decision today, the only real way of describing policies which allocate a preference for children of past pupils is as indirect discrimination - a child couldn't get in to the school because of it.”

“Traveller education is completely neglected by this Government and Jan O'Sullivan should be doing all within her capacity to attempt to improve it, and I would call on her to start by immediately publishing the schools admissions legislation.”
