Ferris commends Ní Riada’s commitment to Irish fishing industry
Martin Ferris, Sinn Féin TD and Spokesman on agriculture, food and the marine, has congratulated his party colleague, Liadh Ní Riada MEP, whose report on the proposed Seafarers’ Directive has received support from the Fisheries’ Committee in Brussels.
Deputy Ferris said:
“I congratulate Liadh Ní Riada for her work on behalf of Irish fishermen. She committed herself to stand up for them in the EU when she was elected and she has not let them down.”
“She is correct in fighting to bring rights and protection to those who work on the sea in line with those who work on land. Why should seafarers have lesser rights and protections? They deserve a level playing field and equal pay for equal work.”
“I was part of the delegation from the Irish fishing industry which went to Brussels recently to voice concerns about the effects of regulation on the small operators. Liadh facilitated a meeting with Commission representatives and clearly listened to what she heard from the fishermen present and is supporting them now when the latest directive is being drafted.”
