Austerity Agenda Needs to be Reversed - Ó Snodaigh

25 February, 2015 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Fein TD and Spokesperson for Social Protection Aengus Ó Snodaigh has called for an immediate change in direction from the government in relation to austerity. Speaking on the motion of Income and Living Conditions in Dáil chamber this evening, he reissued Sinn Féin’s commitment of an end to austerity.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

“This motion catalogues the consequences of austerity with frightening figures, documenting the rise in the numbers experiencing consistent poverty and enforced deprivation. Children, older people and people with disabilities going without heating in their homes, a warm coat or enough food are the hallmark of this government.”

“Then Fine Gael/ and Labour were elected on the promise to do things differently, but what they did instead was more of the same.”

“Fine Gael and Labour cut Farm assist, fuel allowance, the household benefits package and the Back to School Allowance.  They cut child benefit twice, targeted working mothers first taxing maternity benefit and then cutting it. They cut jobseekers benefit, the Invalidity Pension and closed the diet supplement scheme. They stole €325 from family carers in need of respite.”

“The public need a government that has both a moral compass and the capacity to develop and implement credible solutions.”

“In our fully-costed Alternative Budget published last October, we outlined options for the government to begin to reverse austerity.”

“This government never had a mandate to heap misery on so many.  It’s long past time for an election.”
