Adams calls on government to implement report on Irish Language

26 February, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Gerry Adams TD has welcomed commitments from the Taoiseach in the Dáil on Wednesday that he will arrange a debate during Seachtain na Gaeilge on the Report of the Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

The report which was published on Tuesday, looks at the Draft Official Languages Bill. The Taoiseach committed to publishing the bill before the end of the current Dáil session.

The Sinn Féin leader raised this issue with Enda Kenny during Order of Business in the Dáil.

Teachta Adams asked the Taoiseach about the recommendations contained in the Committee Report on the Heads of the Official Languages Bill. And he pointed out that the recommendations heavily stress the need to both provide more services for Irish speakers and to protect current levels.

Speaking afterward Gerry Adams said:

“For Irish to be a living language it must be protected and nurtured and the state must invest in it. For this reason the review of the Official Languages Act must be carefully considered.

“As the Joint Oireachtas report states the sole aim of the review must be about ‘improving its effectiveness in promoting Irish.’

“The Oireachtas report makes 34 far reaching recommendations. I would urge the government to implement all of these.”

Tá fáilte curtha ag Gerry Adams TD roimh ghealltanais a thug an Taoieach sa Dáil inné go reachtálfaidh sé díospóireacht le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge ar Thuarascáil an Chomchoiste um Chomhshaol, Cultúr agus Gaeltacht.

Cíoraíonn an tuarascáil, a foilsíodh arú inné, dréachtBhille na dTeangacha Oifigiúla. Chinntigh an Taoiseach go bhfoilseofar an Bille roimh dheireadh an tseisiúin Dála reatha seo.

D'ardaigh Ceannaire Shinn Féin an cheist i rith Ord Ghnó sa Dáil inniu.

Cheistigh Adams an Taoiseach faoi na moltaí atá ann i dTuarascáil an Chomchoiste ar Cheannteidil Bhille na dTeangacha Oifigiúla. Shonraigh sé go gcuirtear béim sna moltaí ar sheirbhísí a chur ar fáil do phobal na Gaeilge agus ar na seirbhísí atá ann faoi lathair a chosaint araon.

Ag labhairt dó ina dhiaidh, dúirt Gerry Adams:

“Más teanga bheo an Ghaeilge caithfear í a chosaint agus a caomhnú agus caithfidh an Stát a pháirt a dhéanamh. Mar gheall ar seo, caithfear aird cheart a thabhairt ar athbhreithniú Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla. Dearbhaíonn an Tuarascáil seo go gcaithfear gurb é an t-aon sprioc ag an athbhreithniú ná ‘feabhas a chur ar a éifeachtúlacht agus an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn.’

“Leagtar amach 34 mholadh i dTuarascáil an Oireachtais atá fadradharcach. Impím ar an rialtas iad uilig a chur i bhfeidhm.”
