Neglect of rural areas has devastating consequences - Ferris

26 February, 2015 - by Martin Ferris TD

Central Bank figures show that 12% of mortgages in Kerry are in arrears as thousands face repossession and Martin Ferris TD says the neglect of rural areas by this government is the reason.

 Deputy Ferris said:

“There is a very simple equation. People who are at work are less inclined to go into arrears with their mortgages, but the IDA has brought potential new investors to Kerry just three times in the last year.

“People who have access to transport from rural areas to cities are less likely to be unemployed and more likely to get training for work, but this government is allowing Bus Éireann to bypass many small towns and villages.

“Companies are more likely to set up and thrive in areas where they can get decent broadband coverage, but this week Junior Minister Ann Phelan admitted that it would be “a challenge” to provide adequate broadband coverage to rural areas.

“The neglect of rural areas has devastating consequences and it is time that this government began to redress the damage it has already done.”
