Kenny pays lip service to 1916 – Adams
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has accused Enda Kenny of paying lip service to the ideals of the 1916 Proclamation
Mr Adams comments came as the Taoiseach visited Dundalk today to officially open a 1916 exhibition.
Gerry Adams said:
“The Taoiseach is in Dundalk today where he is opening a 1916 exhibition. He will no doubt pay the usual lip service to the ideals of the 1916 but the reality is that his Government’s policies fly in the face of the spirit and letter of the Proclamation.
“While he is in Louth, Mr Kenny might pay a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he can witness for himself the indignities faced by patients and the pressures endured by frontline health workers due to his Government’s policies.
“There were 36 patients lying on trolleys in Our lady of Lourdes this morning. The overcrowding situation there has now deteriorated to such a degree that the hospital has been forced to issue an appeal today for the public to attend the Emergency Department for emergencies only and for people to contact their GP or GP out of hours service in the first instance.
“The brutal and blind pursuit of austerity and the consequent social damage and polarisation we have witnessed under the Fine Gael/Labour Government are the antithesis of the egalitarian principles of the 1916 Proclamation."
