FG MEPs because they're worth it? - Lynn Boylan MEP
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP, Lynn Boylan has called on Irish Fine Gael MEPs to clarify whether they support a call made by Manfred Weber, the leader of their group, the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, for an increase in MEPs’ allowances for employing additional staff.
Speaking today in Dublin Ms. Boylan said:
“MEPs already receive extremely generous allowances and when we see the devastating cuts to ordinary working families being wielded across the EU due to the Troika's Austerity measures, I hardly think it is appropriate that MEP's should be looking for an increase to any of their allowances. In Ireland alone austerity has seen 30% of the population experiencing enforced deprivation.
EPP leader, and German MEP Manfred Weber claims this increase is necessary to employ competent staff to help with the MEP workload even though the secretarial allowance was increased in 2010 and again in 2011 to give MEPs more resources to deal with greater responsibility under the Lisbon treaty.
Given the recent comments made by An Taoiseach regarding his own salary, it would be interesting to hear if his MEPs also believe that they are 'worth it' and support Mr Weber's calls for a rise in allowances?
