Liadh Ni Riada MEP criticises government record on fisheries
Speaking at the Skipper Fishing Expo in Galway today, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada criticised the Irish government’s record on fisheries, and reiterated Sinn Féin’s support for the sector.
Liadh Ní Riada attended the event alongside Sinn Féin general election candidate for Galway West, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
Ní Riada said;
“The importance of events such as the fishing expo is to meet people on the ground. Since being elected last May I have been meeting with fishermen from along the Irish coast. The harrowing stories of the hardship endured by fishermen, their families and communities has always angered me.
“It is obvious that the Irish fishing industry has been poorly represented by the Irish Government at EU level in recent decades. Successive governments are responsible for implementing the draconian restrictions and regulations but then blame the EU when it is convenient for them to do so.
“There is huge potential to create a sustainable and prosperous fishing industry. We need to ensure that there are new ways to create employment from our rich maritime resources.
“That said, I am concerned that the fishing industry is not attractive to young people due to decades of neglect by successive Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour governments who have continuously ignored coastal communities.
"Sinn Féin has a strong team at home and in Europe, and with my colleagues Matt Carthy MEP for Midland’s North West, our fisheries spokesperson in the Dáil; Martin Ferris TD and Minister Michelle O’Neill, we will continue to address these issues and stand up for Irish fishermen and coastal communities."
