Sinn Féin will keep Ireland water charge free-Cllr. Daithí Doolan
Sinn Féin aim to keep the island of Ireland a water charge free zone stated Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan.
Speaking in favour of the first motion at this year's Sinn Féin Ard Fheis clar, Cllr. Doolan said:
"Sinn Féin opposes domestic water charges full stop. We blocked their introduction in the North of Ireland in 2007. We intend to do the same in the South if elected to government at the next election. This island is a water charge free zone and we aim to keep it that way. We are centrally involved in the hugely successful Right 2 Water campaign. We will remain active until water charges are reduced to the rubbish bin of history.
"Irish Water has been a costly disaster. It should be shut down immediately. Over €85m wasted on private consultants, €539m wasted on water meters. Hundreds of Garda hours wasted on policing the ill-fated installation of water meters. This money would be far better invested in upgrading our crumbling water system. Over 40% of water leaking out before a tap is turned on. But this government would prefer to line the pockets of Denis O'Brien rather than plug the leaks.
"The Irish government is on the ropes on this issue. It is under serious public pressure and has made several concessions. But it is not concessions we demand but an immediate repeal of water charges legislation. We have a great opportunity to give the knock out blow on March 21st when we have the next national Right 2 Water march in Dublin. Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets since October. No amount of political policing will distract, divide or defeat the campaign.
"For Sinn Féin this is a red line issue. The message from here is loud and clear, if we are elected to government water charges will be history."
