Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has said that Irish in on its deathbed because of government policies.

Speaking at the Ard Fheis today he said;

“'Live horse and get grass' is most likely the government's philosophy in relation to Irish. The danger is that the Irish language horse is on its deathbed because of the wrongdoings of Enda Kenny and his friends.

“Fine Gael and the Labour have continually attacked the Irish language since they came into power. Seán Ó Cuirreáin, the Language Commissioner resigned from his position because of the lack of support for his work. The Official Languages Act is being amended in such a way that it is being completely weakened inasmuch as the government can get away with it.

“Heather Humphreys chose 'Google Translate' when she was launching the programme for the 1916 commemorations, reasoning that Irish has little role to play in such an event.

“Éamon Ó Cuiv and Fianna Fáil decimated the Údarás na Gaeltachta budget and Dinny McGinley followed suit. He ended direct elections to the bord to make sure that nobody could publicly condemn either the work of the organisation or government policies.

“Joe McHugh is a 'nice guy' who is making a good personal effort, but in relation to government policies regarding the Irish language – 'you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear'!

“The 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language is not functioning and there is a crisis in Gaeltacht regions in terms of young people being able to speak the language.

“But it was heartening to see 10,000 people on the streets and they 'Red with Anger'. The Minister Carál Ní Chuilinn is highlighting the substantial investment and political drive Sinn Féin has regarding our native language. There are other elected representatives who are promoting Irish at every level.

“It goes without saying that Irish speaking communities and the Gaeltacht would be better off with Sinn Féin in government.

“We have to tackle the hostility the civil service has in relation to the language. We have to introduce recruitment quotas so that services in Irish can become available.

“We have to strengthen and broaden the Languages Act. The Language Commissioner should also have a stronger role in overseeing the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language.

“Full status for Irish has to be granted in the European Union.

“There has to be a government in Dublin that will impress upon Westminister and on unionists that the promise to implement the Languages Act in the six counties has to be fulfilled.

“Sinn Féin will stand with the Irish language community, if the Irish language community stands with Sinn Féin.”

Bheadh pobal na Gaeilge níos fearr as le Sinn Féin i Rialtas – Ó Clochartaigh

Deir an Seandóir Ó Clochartaigh go bhfuil an Gaeilge ar leaba an bháis de réir polaisaithe an rialtais.

Ag labhairt ag an Ard Fheis inniú deir sé:

‘Mair a chapaill agus gheobhair féar’ an mana atá ag rialtas Bhleá Cliath i leith na Gaeilge is cosúil. An chontúirt atá ansin ná go bhfuil capall na Gaeilge ar leaba an bháis de bharr an leatrom atá Enda Kenny agus a chuid cairde ag déanamh uirthi.

“Tá ionsaí leanúnach déanta ag Fine Gael agus an Lucht Oibre ar an nGaeilge ó tháinig siad I gcumhacht. D’éirigh an Choimisineir Teanga, Seán Ó Cuirreáin as, de bharr an easpa tacaíochta dá chuid oibre. Tá Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla dhá leasú acu chun lagú iomlan a dhéanamh air, má fhaigheann siad cead a gcinn.

“Chuaigh Heather Humphreys i mbun ‘Google Translate’ agus í ag seoladh clár na gcomórthaí – nach bhfuil ról ar bith ag an nGaeilge ann, dar léi.

“Bhain Éamon Ó Cuív & Fianna Fáil na putógaí amach as bhuiséad Údarás na Gaeltachta agus lean Dinny McGinley an pátrún sin. Chuir sé deireadh leis na toghcháin dhíreacha chuig an bhoird le cinntiú nach mbeadh aon duine ag déanamh cáineadh poiblí ar obair na h-eagraíochta, ná polasaithe an rialtais ach an oiread.

“Is duine ‘deas’ é Joe McHugh atá ag déanamh iarracht mhaith phearsanta, ach maidir le polasaí an rialtais i leith na Gaeilge - ‘cur síoda ar ghabhar, ach is gabhar i gcónaí é’!

“Tá an Straitéis Fiche Bliain don Ghaeilge gan fheidhmiú agus géarchéim sna Gaeltachtaí ó thaobh cumas labhartha Gaeilge an aos-óg.

“Ach, b’ábhar misnigh é 10,000 duine a fheiceáil ar na sráideanna agus iad ‘Dearg le Fearg’. Tá An tAire Carál Ní Chuilinn ag léiriú an infheistíocht shuntasach agus an tiomántas pholaitiúil atá ag Sinn Féin dár dteanga. Tá ionadaithe tofa eile ag cur na Gaeilge chun cinn ag gach leibhéal.

“Níl aon amhras ann ach go mbeadh pobal na Gaeilge & na Gaeltachta níos fearr as le Sinn Féin i Rialtas.

“Caithfear dul i ngleic le doicheall na státseirbhíse i leith na teanga. Caithfear cuótaí a chur i bhfeidhm ar líon na ndaoine atá dhá earcú le seirbhís Gaeilge a chur ar fáil.

“Caithfear Acht na dTeangacha a neartú agus a leathnú. Ba cheart ról níos láidre a thabhairt don Choimisinéír Teanga maidir le maoirsiú an Straitéís Fiche Bliain chomh maith.

“Caithfear Stádas iomlán a bhaint amach don Ghaeilge san Aontas Eorpach.

“Caithfidh Rialtas a bheith i mBleá Cliath a chuirfidh ina luí ar Westminster agus ar Aontachtaithe gur gá an gheallúint maidir le hAcht Teanga a chur i bhfeidhm sna sé chontae, a chomhlíonadh.

“Seasfaidh Sinn Féin le pobal na Gaeilge, má sheasann pobal na Gaeilge le Sinn Féin.”
