Water protesters should never have been put behind bars- Mícheál Mac Donncha
Commenting on the release of the four jailed water protesters and the suspension of a possible sentence on a fifth, Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha said:
"The release of the water protesters is very welcome but they should never have been put behind bars in the first place. They were dragged before the courts by a private company GMC/Sierra funded by public money through its lucrative Irish Water contract. Their jailing exposed in stark terms that those who caused the economic crash have escaped with immunity while people who stood up for their communities and resisted austerity were punished. I commend those jailed and their families for their steadfastness.
The campaign against the unjust double taxation of water charges and against the privatisation of water will continue until complete success is achieved."
