Senator Ó Clochartaigh delighted to announce Sinn Féin Bill on extension of voting rights

9 March, 2015

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Diaspora Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh is delighted to announce the launch of Sinn Féin’s Private Bill which calls for a referendum to extend voting rights to citizens in both the north and the Diaspora, as well as enable 16 year olds to vote in presidential elections. The Bill will be brought in front of the Dáil on Tuesday evening.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said

“I’m delighted that this Bill is being brought in front of the Dáil this week. For too long the government have been vacillating on the issue of voting rights for the Diaspora, those living in the north, as well as those aged 16 and upwards in presidential elections. These measures were advocated in the much trumpeted Constitutional Convention, and it’s now time for the government to practice what they have been preaching.

“Government ministers will be travelling next week to all corners of the globe to extend their hand to the Irish community overseas. The passing of this Bill would enable them to truly engage with the Diaspora in a way which is meaningful and incisive.

“The Irish Diaspora have long deserved representation in the Dáil and Seanad. Sinn Féin is working hard to ensure that the fundamental rights of Irish citizens are recognised, regardless of where they live. We have also persistently campaigned for Irish citizens aged 16 and 17 to have voting rights in presidential elections.

“It is now time for the government to act above and beyond the bandying about of niceties. Representation of the Diaspora in our Houses is long overdue and I sincerely hope that Sinn Féin’s Bill will be passed this week. Our global network of citizens deserve better.”

Ríméad ar An Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh leathnú na gceart vótála a fhógairt

Tá ríméad ar Urlabhraí Shinn Féin don Diaspóra, An Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, seoladh Bhille Príobháideach Shinn Féin le cearta vótála a leathnú a fhógairt. Iarrann an Bille Reifreann le cearta vótála a leathnú do shaoránaigh ó thuaidh agus sa Diaspóra, chomh maith le cead a thabhairt do dhaoine atá 16 bliana d’aois vótáil i dtoghcháin uachtaránachta. Tabharfar an Bille os comhair na Dála tráthnóna Dé Máirt.

Dúirt an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh:

“Tá ríméad orm go bhfuil an Bille seo á thabhairt os comhair na Dála an tseachtain seo. Tá an rialtas tar éis a bheith siar is aniar agus iad ag machnamh faoi chearta vótála don Diaspóra, dóibh siúd a chónaíonn ó thuaidh, chomh maith leo sin atá 16 bliana d’aois nó os a chionn a bheith a vótáil i dtogháin don uachtarán. Tá sé thar am ag an Rialtas beart a dhéanamh de réir a mbriathair.

“Beidh Airí an Rialtais ag taisteal ar fud na cruinne an tseachtain seo chugainn le lámh chairdis a shíneadh i dtreo an phobail Éireannaigh atá ina gcónaí thar lear. Dá n-éireodh leis an mBille seo d’fhéadfaidís teagmháil agus nasc níos fiúntaí a dhéanamh leis an Diaspóra i mbealach a mbeadh brí agus géarchúis ann.

“Tá ionadaíocht sa Dáil agus sa Seanad tuillte ag an Diaspóra Éireannach le fada an lá. Tá Sinn Féin ag obair go dian le cinntiú go dtugtar aitheantas do bhunchearta na saoránach Éireannach, cuma pé áit a bhfuil cónaí orthu. Táimid seasta ag feachtasaíocht ar son cearta vótála i dtoghcháin don Uachtarán a bheith acu siúd atá 16 agus 17 mbliana d’aois.

“Tá sé thar am ag an rialtas gníomhú anois seachas an fudar fadar seo ar fad. Tá ionadaíocht an Diaspóra i dTithe an Oireachtais ag teastáil go géar agus táim ag súil go mór go n-éireoidh le Bille Shinn Féin an tseachtain seo. Tá a leithéid tuillte ag an líonra domhanda d’Éireannaigh thar lear.”
