Sinn
Féin Senator David Cullinane and Mid-Ulster MP Francie Molloy today met with
Greek Minister Euclid Tsakalotos in Westminster. They attended a briefing
meeting organised by the Greek Solidarity campaign in London and Westminster MPs
and economists.
The Sinn Féin representatives addressed Mr Tsakalotos on the political
landscape in Ireland and pledged continued support for a European Debt
Conference.
Mr Tsakalotos briefed the meeting on the situation in Greece including the
continuing humanitarian crisis and the efforts to tackle it.
Speaking after the meeting Senator Cullinane said;
“We in Sinn Féin were delighted to have Mr Tsakalotos address our Ard Fheis in
Derry over the weekend and I was happy to get the opportunity to for a
discussion with him today in London.
“My colleague Francie Molloy and I addressed the Syriza Minister on the
changing political landscape in Ireland and gave him a firm commitment of
continued support for a European Debt Conference.
“We wished him and his government well in the continuing efforts to deal with
the humanitarian crisis in Greece and we told him that it was our view that the
Irish Government should have done more to support Greece’s efforts to alleviate
their debt.
“The Irish people are only too aware of the devastating effects of austerity
and we offered our solidarity with the people of Greece as they begin to deal
with the consequences of the previous regime’s policies.”
