A fair recovery is not possible under Fine Gael/Labour - Doherty

12 March, 2015 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said a fair recovery under the current government is not possible.

Deputy Doherty said:

“Like all Irish people I am happy to see the economy return to growth. Our focus now must be on making it a fair recovery. The fact is that such a recovery is not possible under this government.”

“The government’s austerity policies have not paid off. Instead they deepened and prolonged the recession and made sure that inequality has thrived. They are presiding over a repossession crisis they facilitated. They have sided with the banks over the people and with the needs of the Troika over the needs of our society.”

“They have used emigration as a safety valve even going so far as to cut young people’s jobseekers' allowance to push our young people away. This is a deeply cynical and unfair government and impressive growth figures cannot change that.”

“It is time to rebuild our communities and repair our society. Now is not the time for income tax cuts, rather it is time to invest in our public services and to abolish regressive taxes like the Family Home tax and Water Charges.”
