Ellis calls for GSOC investigation into Pepper Spray incident

16 March, 2015 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Fein Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has called for an investigation into a video which seems to show a Garda using excessive force on a homeless man.

After viewing the video, captured by a passerby on Henry St. and subsequently posted on social media, the Dublin North West TD said;

“Based on the footage alone, this seems to me to be an unprovoked attack on a member of the homeless community; one the most marginalised groups in our society”

“An Garda Síochána are sworn to discharge their duties with fairness, integrity, regard for human rights, diligence and impartiality with equal respect to all people, regardless of their personal circumstances. Yet what I have witnessed in this video, is total lack of compassion and what can only be described as inhumane and demeaning treatment”

“I will be writing to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman’s Commission personally to call for an investigation into this incident”

“If this is indeed unprovoked and without cause, it will only serve to further reduce any confidence the public have in our police force and call into question how the authorities view societies most disadvantaged people”

“I would urge people who witness Garda wrongdoing not to hesitate in contacting GSOC. Incidents such as that witnessed on Henry Street must not go unchallenged”
