Abysmal drop in number of people under 34 in employment under Fine Gael/Labour in government – Reilly

16 March, 2015 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin Senator Kathryn Reilly has reacted to Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures which have again revealed a worrying trend in employment figures for young people.

Senator Reilly said:

“Young people don’t feel hard done by this government; they are categorically being hard done by this government.”

“The latest CSO employment figures have highlighted a trend; they have shown that yet again the number of people under 34 in employment dropped in the final quarter of 2014. In fact, the number of people in employment in this age group has been dropping since the government took office. There are now nearly 50,000 less young people in employment since Fine Gael and Labour came to power.”

“This group has suffered substantially at the hands of this government. Not only have they provided the vast majority of emigrants, but they have also suffered enormously when it comes to the availability of employment.”

“The government can throw out unemployment figures and try and fool the public into believing that Ireland is recovering. But the Irish people are too used to this rhetoric; they have seen through this spin, they know that there is a two-tier recovery happening in Ireland.”

“We do not need more spin and deliberately ambiguous figures from the government. What we need is a recovery for all.”
