Israeli cultural attacks could ignite a religious war – Anderson

16 March, 2015 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has today travelled to Jerusalem leading a delegation of MEP’s with the hope of visiting Gaza. Martina will also attend a number of events aimed at shining the International spotlight on the ongoing struggle of Palestinian people.

Martina will attempt to secure access to Gaza;  an area devastated by Israeli attacks during Operation Protective Edge, which resulted in the deaths of over 2,200 people the vast majority of them Gazans.

She will also meet with a number of officials, including Dr. Rafiq Husseini CEO, Makassed Charitable Hospital, East Jerusalem. The hospital continues to treat children hurt during the Gaza onslaught.

Speaking today, MEP for the Six Counties Martina, said;

“Travelling to Palestine is an important part of my work as chair of the Palestinian Delegation.”

“Palestinians are a wonderfully resilient people and I am always heartened to see how communities devastated by the military might of Israel are capable of looking forward, however it is incumbent on the International community to continue to provide support to Gazans and the people of the West Bank.”

“Recent incidents have highlighted that the Israeli Government continue to suppress the Palestinian people under the boot of oppression, by attacking their culture and heritage.”

“Israel’s Dr Avshalom Kor has proposed that all Arabic and ‘foreign’ names of Jerusalem's sites and streets, be replaced with Hebrew titles derived from ancient Jewish heritage. The policy of renaming sites and locations began with the occupation of Palestine in 1948 and continues today”

“The proposal by Israeli authorities is a serious indication that Israel is intent on rebuilding Temple Mount and destroying Al-Aqsa Mosque”

“The Geneva Convention makes it incumbent on the occupation government of Israel to protect the city's history and heritage - what we are witnessing has the potential to ignite a religious war.”
