DRD Committee had no option to refer Minister to PPS

23 March, 2015 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said the Regional Development Committee had no option but to refer Minister Danny Kennedy to the Public Prosecution Service for his refusal to carry out a Project Assessment Review (PAR) into the differential of cost on the Derry Coleraine railway upgrade as instructed by the committee.

 Mr. Ó hOisín said,

“The Regional Development Committee is there to scrutinise the work of the Minister and hold him to account on the management of the department.

“The committee requested a Public Assessment Review into why the valuation of the Derry-Coleraine railway line upgrade came in twice the cost as originally forecast.

“The minister has so far refused to hold a PAR and the committee has agreed to refer him to the PPS in order to force him to live up to his responsibilities.

“The upgrade of the Derry Coleraine line is an important stage in the improvement of the infrastructure of the North West and therefore must go ahead.

“We have already seen the lack of political will in the development of the A5 and A6 and Sinn Féin is determined that these projects will proceed by holding the Minister to account through the committee.”
