McDonnell comments an ill-conceived fig leaf - Brady
Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady has dismissed the remarks from Alasdair McDonnell as a fig leaf to cover the SDLP's record on protecting the vulnerable.
Mr Brady said;
"The bizarre claim of Alasdair McDonnell in claiming that a vote for Sinn Féin is a vote for the Tories is absolutely ridiculous and does not stand up to any form of scrutiny.
"Sinn Féin have been very clear in our opposition to the cuts agenda bring driven by the Tory-led British government.
"We have faced down their extreme austerity agenda and placed the protection of the most vulnerable in our society as our priority.
"By contrast, the SDLP were prepared to settle for less in the negotiations in December which led to the Stormont House Agreement.
"They were content to settle for proposals that did not include protections for children with disabilities, adults with severe disabilities, the long term sick and large families.
"Sinn Féin went further and battled to secure protections for these vulnerable groups after the SDLP had effectively given up.
"As Sinn Féin continue to oppose Tory cuts, Alasdair McDonnell and the SDLP, in refusing to enter into progressive alliances, are facilitating Tory-supporting candidates.
"His latest remarks are merely an ill-conceived fig leaf for his lack of action on protecting the vulnerable.
"Sinn Féin have been a clear and consistent voice against the cuts agenda of the Tories and will continue to oppose austerity from London, Dublin and Europe."
