Government has not learnt lessons of water protests – Cullinane

24 March, 2015 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane has commended the water protesters who took to the street last Saturday and called on the government not to pursue people for non-payment of water charges.

Speaking during debate in the Seanad, Senator Cullinane said:

“The government is scaremongering with its veiled threats to deduct water charges from people’s welfare payments or wages.

“If this were to happen it would be nothing short of a disgrace and shows how of touch this government is with ordinary people.

“People are opposed to water charges and to the austerity policies of this government.

“The carrot approach of the government to get people to sign up to Irish Water has failed miserably so now it is resorting to the stick.

“This too will come to nought.

“People will not be intimidated by a government that puts the interests of bankers, bond holders and developers before those of ordinary people.

“The government should end this foolishness and abandon the idiocy of water charges.”
