Ellis calls for an Oireachtas reception for Rugby heroes
Sinn Féin Sports spokesperson Dessie Ellis has called on the government to facilitate an Oireachtas reception to honour the recent success of the Irish men's and women's Rugby teams. Last weekend the women's Irish Rugby team secured the 6 nations title with an amazing victory over Scotland.
Deputy Ellis said;
"This is another in a series of major achievements by Irish sportswomen which we must respect and honour. This team are an inspiration to anyone involved in sports and should be recognised as such.
“I want the Minister for Sports and An Taoiseach to invite the team and their close family into the Oireachtas for a reception to show our appreciation for their efforts and to highlight their amazing success. Saturdays win was not just the finale to a successful 6 Nations campaign but a recording breaking score for the team with a margin of 70 points between Ireland and Scotland.
“Last year the team achieved 4th place in the Rugby World Cup and have not stopped improving and developing. Their dedication has brought them their 2nd 6 Nations Championship in 3 years. They are true champions and I look forward to congratulating them in person in the Oireachtas."
