Court judgement could have major impact on local housing

26 March, 2015 - by Fra McCann

The Supreme Court has found that a London woman has the right to be rehoused in accommodation close to her children’s schools

 Mr McCann said,

“The ruling at the Supreme Court in Britain may have a major impact on the housing situation here.

“Many applicants have turned down homes offered by local providers of social housing which were not situated close to facilities like schools.

“I have argued the need of applicants to be housed close to schools and other facilities to meet their children’s educational and other needs.

“This has often not been accepted by housing providers here as a valid reason to turn down a house.

“We await the release of the full judgement to determine the direction housing providers will have to travel when evaluating the local needs of housing applicants.

“What is important in my view is that accommodation suits the needs of the applicant and their family.”
