Homeless families at risk of losing children- Cllr Sarah Holland
Cllr Sarah Holland has today condemned the government’s insipid response to the housing crisis.
“I wrote to the Minister for Children earlier this year to raise my concerns that he was not fulfilling his duty of care to the children of this state.
“Kids living in one hotel room with their families are suffering – they cannot have healthy home cooked meals, they have no space to play and their cognitive and physical development is suffering.
“The Minister responded by passing the buck to the housing minister, who promptly passed it back to local authorities, who have been starved of resources and cannot house these families.
“One mother has come to us to report that a women’s shelter has had to ask her and her children to leave. Their funding has been cut and they cannot keep anyone long term.
“This woman visited the council to plead for emergency accommodation. She told them that she would soon be forced to sleep in her car and was told that in that case, her children would be taken off her.
This housing crisis is not of this woman’s making, but she is being punished.
She fled a violent relationship and instead of receiving support and sanctuary, she is being made to feel like a second class citizen and is threatened with the removal of her kids.
“This woman and her children, like many others, are homeless. We have failed them as a society and the government continues to turn a blind eye to their suffering.
“We will not allow these women and children to be swept under the carpet – we need to start building homes, and quickly.
