Kearney calls for urgent relief for community under siege
Sinn Féin Westminster candidate Declan Kearney has called for urgent action to address the ongoing issue of drug dealing and associated criminality in the Town Parks North estate, Antrim town.
Speaking after engaging directly with many residents at the weekend, South Antrim Sinn Féin candidate Declan Kearney expressed his dismay that so many people are living with the constant threat of criminal activity in their area.
Mr Kearney stated,
“The residents I spoke to are clearly at their wits end as a result of the criminality, trespass and vandalism visited on them in recent months by anti-community elements. Many of them are long-term residents of Town Parks, Antrim Town, including some who have lived in the area for over thirty years. Their real distress is the result of long running, widespread anti-social behaviour and blatant criminality; this includes drug dealing and life threatening arson attacks on property.
“Young families and elderly now feel threatened in their own homes by those who appear to act with impunity and have only recently arrived in the estate.
“Sinn Féin’s Antrim Town councillor, Noel Maguire, has been engaged with residents in recent times to find a solution. I want to acknowledge those residents who have had the courage so far to engage with the various agencies in plotting a way forward.
“It is also clear that the PSNI have been actively trying to address the current levels of anti-social and community behaviour. I understand some officers have been injured while rescuing victims of recent arson attacks and I want to commend the police for their efforts. However, much more needs to be done to re-establish the levels of local community safety which Town Parks families deserve.
“The answer clearly resides in a multiagency strategy through which all statutory agencies, including the housing executive, can work alongside the local community to help bring these criminals to justice and restore local civic pride in the estate.
“The Sinn Féin team will be intensifying our efforts this week to have these issues appropriately addressed by all relevant agencies as quickly as possible, and help the local community reclaim their area.”
