Parades can be sorted through dialogue with residents

6 April, 2015 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has said that the Orange Order needs to engage in dialogue with local residents in order to resolve outstanding issues around contentious parades.

Speaking after there was a breach of the Parades Commission determination at the Apprentice Boys Parade in North Belfast Ms. Ní Chuilín said,

Today was the first official parade in what is a long marching season and already we have seen a breach of the Parades Commission determination.

“The parade was one hour late on the return route and the music played outside St Patrick’s Church was not hymns.

“Both of these breaches have been reported to the Parades Commission and the PSNI.

“I however believe that all outstanding issues can be resolved through dialogue between the loyal orders and local residents which would auger well for the rest of the marching season.

“I am calling on the Loyal Orders to meet with local residents in areas where parades are seen as contentious and resolve the issues surrounding them before we move into the summer.”
