Reports of discriminatory action against striking Dunnes workers alarming- Lynn Boylan
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has called Mandate Trade Union reports of discriminatory action against Dunnes workers who took part in industrial action last week as, “alarming” and “disturbing”.
Speaking in her capacity as Sinn Féin's representative on the EU Employment and Social affairs Committee, Ms. Boylan said:
“Mandate Trade Union, today has highlighted how many of these workers have been subject to “vindictive” and “premeditated” treatment by their employer.
In some cases staff were dismissed from their roles, with others receiving cuts and changes to work patterns.
While the alleged behaviour of Dunnes management is utterly reprehensible, successive governments have also played a role in compounding the unacceptable working conditions facing Dunnes workers.
The failure of previous governments to fully implement the EU 1997 part time workers directive and the failure to introduce legislation on collective bargaining are prime examples of how successive Irish governments have failed to protect worker’s rights."
