Ó Muilleoir welcomes Boston Mayor’s backing for Belpot
Máirtín Ó Muilleoir MLA has welcomed the announcement today in Boston by Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh and Lord Mayor of Belfast Arder Carson that the BelPot featuring four Massachusetts ice hockey teams will take place in Belfast in late November.
"This is the first major fruits of the sister city agreement I signed with Mayor Walsh last May and will be the first time we have ever had a US college ice hockey tournament outside of North America.
“This will bring a much-needed shot in the arm to our hospitality business in the off-season, cement our ties with Boston and showcase the potential of Belfast to the millions who follow college ice hockey in the US.
“Mayor Walsh led the diaspora contingent to the first Belfast Homecoming last year and said then, on a visit to the Belfast Giants, that he would work to bring the BelPot to Belfast. He has now delivered big-time.
"I commend Steve Thornton of the Belfast Giants, Robbie Fitzpatrick of the Odyssey and our many friends in the Diaspora for making this groundbreaking event possible."
