Sinn Féin support Dublin Bus drivers as union announces day of action- Lynn Boylan MEP
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has thrown her support behind Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann Drivers as the National Bus and Rail Union vote for a Day of Action across the country on May 1st, International Worker’s Day.
Speaking today in Dublin Ms Boylan said:
“Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann drivers from NBRU have this lunchtime voted to embark on industrial actions as they begin the fightback against government privatisation plans for 10% of bus routes.
Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann provide invaluable transport links that are a lifeline to many rural communities and to countless pensioners in urban areas.
Privatisation will inevitably lead to some of the non-profitable routes being discontinued and some areas being deprived of essential transport services.
There is ample evidence from countries across Europe where the privatisation of bus routes has led to higher bus fares and poorer working conditions.
In fact in England, authorities are looking at renationalising bus and rail routes after their disastrous experience of privatisation.
Both the consumer and the employee are set to lose out if this privatisation plan goes ahead, therefore I would urge all users of Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann to support the drivers on 1st May and join their calls for a properly funded public transport service."
