Further robust political reforms needed - Adams

13 April, 2015 - by Gerry Adams

Responding to the recommendations of the Working Group on Seanad Reform, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams said:

“I welcome the recommendations of the Working Group on Seanad Reform regarding voting rights for citizens in the North and among the Irish Diaspora. However citizens in the North should also have Oireachtas representation as of right.

“Sinn Féin has made proposals in this regard and this was something promised by as far back as the Bertie Ahern era. The Government should now schedule debates in both Dáil and Seanad on this report.

“The Taoiseach needs to demonstrate that he is actually serious about implementing change. Mr Kenny's clear abuse of the Seanad during the John McNulty affair does not inspire confidence.

“Further robust political reforms need to be considered which would go much further than the report recommendations. These include reforms designed to advance the representation of women, minorities, citizens in North and the diaspora.”
